• Dental Oncology

  • Dental oncology services are available at the Penrose Cancer Center for patients who receive radiation therapy as part of their cancer treatment plan.

Side effects of radiation to the head and neck region can compromise the quality of life for patients both during and after treatment  that may include:

    • dry mouth (xerostomia) due to damaged salivary glands resulting in a significant increase in tooth decay (cavities)
    • mouth sores (mucositis)
    • fungal infection (thrush)
    • difficulty eating, speaking and swallowing

The dental oncology hygienist provides a comprehensive individual oral care program to help reduce potential side effects of radiation throughout a patient's cancer journey.

    Services may include:

    • preventive and therapeutic periodontal therapy (cleanings)
    • fabrication of custom mouth guards for radiation therapy
    • fluoride trays
