Radiation Oncology
Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to damage cancer cells, keep them from growing and ultimately killing the cells so that the cancer shrinks. Radiation can be external, when a machine outside the body aims radiation at cancer cells, or internal, when radiation is placed inside the body where the cancer cells are located.
Radiation therapy, unlike chemotherapy, is a localized treatment, killing only cells where the radiation is delivered and causing minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
Depending on the type, stage and location of the cancer and the goal of the treatment, radiation oncologists may recommend one or more treatment methods that provide the most complete care plan. For newly diagnosed cancer patients, a multi-modality treatment plan is often used that may include surgery, chemotherapy, biologic therapy and/radiation therapy. These treatments may be administered concurrently (at the same time) or sequentially (one following another).
