Gynecologic Oncology at Penrose Cancer Center in Colorado Springs
As part of our multidisciplinary scope of cancer care, Penrose Cancer Center offers Gynecologic Oncology, a highly specialized field that offers leading-edge treatment to women with cancer of the reproductive system including both internal and external anatomy. The care is provided by a physician specially trained in gynecological oncology.
To become a gynecologic oncologist, physicians are required to complete an approved four-year residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology plus an additional two- to four-year clinical fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology. And unlike general oncologists, gynecological oncologists can perform surgery, give chemotherapy and participate in radiation therapy. Dr. Dirk Pikaart is the only gynecologic oncologist in southern Colorado, with his office, Southern Colorado GYN Oncology, conveniently located on the first floor of Penrose Cancer Center.
Dr. Pikaart brings with him a superior level of knowledge and experience in advanced gynecologic surgery and chemotherapeutics, offering progressive medical and surgical techniques to southern Colorado women. Unique services include intraperitoneal chemotherapy, radical robotic surgery and other minimally invasive surgical procedures. He has performed over 300 robotic surgeries to date using the da Vinci® Surgical System. Penrose Hospital is the only facility in southern Colorado to feature this advanced robotic surgery technology.
